What it reads

Three things we read before we say a date.

Four frames, one verdict

A leaf up close, the whole plant, the texture of a stem. Four frames read against each other until the name is certain enough to act on. The fifth photograph is the pot, and it is for your record, not the classifier's.

The pot has opinions

Pot size sets the pour, never the date, a small glass to three and a half cups. Terracotta breathes where plastic holds moisture close, and that is a real term in the interval, not a note: clay comes in about twelve percent shorter than plastic. It is also one of four things no photograph can tell us, along with the mix, whether the pot can drain, and how much of it the roots have taken.

The week over your street

The week crossing thirty degrees pulls a fourteen-day plant in to eleven. Outdoors, ten percent drier air can take another day off it; indoors the same air usually changes nothing, because a room halves the swing and we round to whole days rather than claim a precision the forecast hasn't got. The problem

Plants don't live on schedules.

A seven-day reminder doesn't know the week turned hot, or that the air went dry, or that your Monstera stands in full sun on a balcony while the same species sits in a shaded room three floors up. It only knows it has been seven days.

A plant is named from the shape of a leaf, the way a stem holds it, the habit of the whole thing. One hurried photograph gives a classifier one chance at all of that. Four give it four.

These are the angles worth having, not five slots you must fill. One photograph is enough to run a reading. The fifth plate is the pot: it carries no botanical signal, so it never goes to the classifier at all. It stays a record shot of what the plant stands in. The leaf plates are submitted labelled as leaves; the rest the classifier reads for itself.

The limits of a photograph

Three readings meet here: a disease classifier trained on a closed set of coded diseases, a vision model that can describe what it sees but cannot be calibrated, and your own watering log. None of them has a soil sample, a sensor or a laboratory. That is why each cause carries a band rather than a percentage, and why the vision model's unaided opinion can never read stronger than "possible". Take it as a second opinion that points you somewhere. Not a verdict, and never a substitute for looking at the plant yourself.

Where the AI is, and where it deliberately isn't.

Three parts of this app use a model, and it is worth being exact about which, because the fourth is the one that decides when to water and it uses none.

Naming the plant. Pl@ntNet's classifier does the work. A model trained on millions of labelled botanical photographs, not a chatbot guessing. When its top match is weak or too close to the runner-up, a vision model re-reads two of your photographs as a second opinion. It can only reorder Pl@ntNet's own candidates; it cannot invent a species, and when it promotes one the app says so.

Reading a sick leaf. Pl@ntNet's disease classifier ranks the causes against a closed set of coded diseases. A vision model describes what is actually visible and writes the steps, because that is the thing a classifier can't do. Your own watering log can overrule either of them. A cause the vision model reached alone never reads stronger than "possible".

Answering a question about your plant. A language model, handed that plant's species, its interval, its pot, where it stands and the weather over it. So the answer is about your plant and not about plants in general. Ask it anything; it will decline to wander off the subject.

Not the watering date. That is arithmetic: eleven bounded multipliers, no model trained, nothing guessed. And the whole chain shown to you on the plant's own page. A language model that is confident and wrong about a watering interval will kill a plant slowly, and there is no reason to hand it that job when a species baseline and a forecast will do it and can be checked.

Every model here is named, and so is its limit. Nothing on this page is a model's opinion presented as a measurement.
